Who are we?

We perform six main concerts per year and sing in a variety of venues. Our repertoire isvery mixed and includes, choral classics, songs from musicals, from around the world, gospel, jazzy, contemporary and fun pieces, according to the concert. Prospective members need to be able to sing a part independently and have basic sight reading skills. There are no auditions but singers have a trial period initially

What do we offer?

Besides the prospect of singing at a variety of concerts and venues, there is also the opportunity for aspiring choral conductors to direct a specified piece during a performance. Members who are aspiring or established composers are invited to submit scores to the director for performance by the choir. More skilled or experienced singers will be invited to join Core Voices or to sing solos.

We also have an active social agenda, giving you the opportunity to celebrate with the choir in our successes.

About our Director

Our founder and director is Dr Mary Black, who has more than 30 years’ experience as a choir director, in universities and the community, in Liverpool and Yorkshire. As a solo singer, she has performed in venues throughout Yorkshire and the North West. Her PhD is in choral directing, therefore she is able to combine the practice and the research of singing and choir directing within Liverpool Phoenix Voices.

Our story so far

This choir was born out of Hope Park Voices, which was founded by our current musical director, Mary Black, in 2006 and was based in Liverpool Hope University. The principles of education still feature strongly within the choir and are a unique feature of it. We have performed pieces by local composers, including several world premières, and have performed at venues locally and across the country including York Minster, Birmingham Symphony Hall, Winchester and Canterbury cathedrals.
