About us

We are a community based, mixed-voice choir of around 30 members. We have a wide range of ages, backgrounds and experience. We perform a varied repertoire to a high standard

who are we?

We perform six main concerts per year and sing in a variety of venues. Our repertoire is very mixed and includes choral classics, songs from musicals, from around the world, gospel, jazzy, contemporary and fun pieces, according to the concert.

Prospective members need to be able to sing in tune and have basic sight reading skills. There are no auditions but singers have a trial period initially

Key Opportunities

We offer you more than just the opportunity to sing; members may also apply to the choir director for a chance to conduct, perform a solo, or compose for the choir.

what do we offer?

Besides the prospect of singing at a variety of concerts and venues, there is also the opportunity for aspiring choral conductors to direct a specified piece during a performance. Members who are aspiring or established composers are invited to submit scores to the director for performance by the choir. More skilled or experienced singers will be invited to join Core Voices or to sing solos.

We also have an active social agenda, giving you the opportunity to celebrate with the choir in our successes.

about our director

Our founder and director is Dr Mary Black, who has more than 30 years’ experience as a choir director, in universities and the community, in Liverpool and Yorkshire.

As a solo singer, she has performed in venues throughout Yorkshire and the North West. Her PhD is in choral directing, therefore she is able to combine the practice and the research of singing and choir directing within Liverpool Phoenix Voices.

Our Story So Far

In 2016, Liverpool Phoenix Voices was born out of Hope Park Voices, which was founded by our musical director, Mary Black, in 2006. We have performed pieces by local composers, including several world premieres, and have performed at venues in Liverpool and across the country including Leicester, Kendal, Wigan, York, Birmingham, Winchester and Canterbury.
